Victim of crash suffers multiple broken bones

The recent crash occurred at the intersection of N. Liberty Street and Mount Clinton Pike in Harrisonburg. A 21-year-old driving a 1998 BMW heading west did not stop when his signal turned red. As a result, he collided with the 43-year-old traveling south, riding a moped. The moped driver was taken to Sentara Regional Medical Hospital, but transferred to the UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville due to the severity of his injuries. The man suffered a broken neck, broken ankle, a leg broken in two places, and a ruptured spleen, in addition to other minor injuries. The BMW driver was arrested and charged with failure to obey a traffic signal, driving on a suspended license, and failure to carry insurance.

Red light runner crashes are a major source of injuries

Red light runners are the cause of thousands of accidents every year across the US. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 709 people were killed and some 126,000 people were injured in crashes caused by red light running in 2014 alone. Roughly half of those killed were pedestrians, bicyclists, or the occupants of vehicles hit by the light-running driver. Red light runner collisions are the most common type of accident in urban areas and result in an injury 39% of the time. A study conducted by monitoring intersections without red light cameras found that, on average, 3.2 cars ran a red light every hour at each intersection included in the study. Red light runner collisions often take the form of T-bone crashes, which is among the most fatal types of accidents to drivers.
