In the midst of the Covid-19 crisis , the people of Virginia are reaching out to help those who are more vulnerable at present and are in need of assistance. A number of government organizations and nonprofits are supporting Virginia families impacted by coronavirus pandemic. Virginians can contribute to these efforts by offering to volunteer or giving donations.

Backpacks of Love

Backpacks of Love is an organization providing food access to kids in Buckingham, Powhatan, Goochland, Henrico, Amelia, Chesterfield, and Cumberland counties. Your monetary donations to this organization will go toward buying food and supplies for the students’ backpacks. They need canned foods and other non-perishables. Chesterfield Food Bank

This food bank is serving neighbors in Virginia who don’t qualify for government assistance. They need volunteers for food preparation and distribution. You can also donate to them peanut butter, canned fruits, juices, soups, pop tarts, granola bars, and cheese.

FeedMore

This food bank in Central Virginia is involved in the collection, preparation and distribution of food to neighborhoods across 34 counties and cities that are in need of assistance. They are looking for volunteers to help with preparing and packing of meals.

Blessing Warriors RVA

They provide food and other support to the homeless in Richmond. They are accepting donations to buy food items.

Family Lifeline

Family Lifeline is partnering with individuals and families to deliver home and community-based services to enable safe, connected and healthy living for all. The organization urgently requires items such as hand sanitizers, hand soap and powder free exam gloves, disinfectant wipes or sprays, and paper towels. The supplies will be utilized for the group’s in-home personal care for the elderly and for people with disabilities.

Ronald McDonald House

The group is working to keep families close to the care they may need in these times and providing relief from logistical and financial burden for thousands of families. They are accepting donations of Amazon, Target, or Kroger gift cards. You may also buy family size microwaveable meals, frozen meals or snacks and drop them off at the house in Richmond. St. Thomas Food Pantry

This organization is committed to fighting hunger, neglect and loneliness by providing neighbors with healthy food and positive social engagement. You can volunteer your time to support them.

Jackson Ward Youth Peace Team

This group provides food access to children and also distributes groceries to families in need. They are accepting donations of items, such as gloves, paper towels, spray bottles, bleach, boxes for food distribution, jelly, peanut butter, cabbage, broth, juice, bread, and canned tuna.

Senior Connections

This organization is helping seniors maintain their independence and quality of life. You can provide them gift cards to help families buy necessities for their elderly family members. Volunteering opportunities with the group include phone calls to check on older adults and assisting with the assembling of packages. Check out their website for more information.

Voices for Virginia’s Children

This organization promotes and supports public policies that can help improve the life of children in Virginia. The group provides support for foster youth at colleges and universities as well as foster care homes.

VA 30 Day Fund

This is a nonprofit launched by a technology entrepreneur and his wife in northern Virginia. Their goal is to help small businesses survive. The group only recently started as a unique idea to support small businesses in the state. They are offering businesses forgivable loans up to $3,000 if the loan application of the business gets approved.

Any small business, which is based in Virginia for at least one year, and employs between three and 30 people is eligible to apply for this loan. The funds that are disbursed through VA 30 Day Fund are not required to be paid back. The group’s founder Snyder and his wife Burson pooled the initial amount of $100,000 from their own pocket to launch the fund.

By the third day of the launch of the fund, they were able send cash to the bank accounts of more than two dozen small businesses in the state. The fund managed to raise a quarter of a million dollars within the first two days from the community. You can apply for a loan on their website.
